R1, CLEAN BASE HIT (ROTATION #1)

With R1 only and a CLEAN BASE HIT, the PU rotates up the 3B line to the “library” where he “reads” the play.  The READ here is important to ensure the PU does not over or under commit to the continuing play.  If it is evident that there will be a play at 3B, the PU moves inside to the grass cutout to take the play.  In the event of an OVERTHROW, the PU moves on the INSIDE of the INFIELD grass to HOME and takes any play there in FAIR territory, so as not to be in the throwing lane.

If the continuing play appears that 1) there will be no play at 3B whatsoever or, it becomes obvious that R1 will head for home, the PU must react quickly and return to POINT-OF-PLATE so he is ready for the play.  There could also be a rundown or back-pick into 3B on R1, so the PU must split the difference and move accordingly so as not to be caught by surprise.

Watch the video below to take the lesson and see the proper mechanics for each play type.
